It’s all connected: Warming Up, The Night Ministry, Golf

Just got back from the most beautiful day of golf ever. Bill and I played in The Night Ministry’s annual outing, at Kemper Lakes, home of the 1989 PGA Championship. What a beautiful course….plus I played well. Felt very privileged all day, and, of course, reminded of the superb work done by The Night Ministry with the homeless, especially homeless youth, and homeless pregnant girls.

When She Writes publishes Warming Up later this fall, 10% of my proceeds will go to TNM. When I was writing Warming Up I was very aware that Kix was a very attractive character, despite his many problems; I didn’t want to glamorize his life on the street. Serendipitously, I was invited to tour THN and take a van tour of their food and health bus which is out on the street 4 nights a week, visiting several neighborhoods to deliver soup and sandwiches, offer HIV and hepatitis testing, and provide other social services to help those on the street. I learned a lot about who the kids on the street really are. My partner Brian Fergemann joined the Board, and at Winston & Strawn we’ve been collecting toiletries throughout the year for distribution to the homeless, and gift cards, hats and mittens at Christmas. All of which proves, re writing, that when you are writing a novel, the universe gives you what you need, if you are open to it

If you’re looking for a volunteer gig, I highly recommend The Night Ministry.

And. of course, I highly recommend Warming Up as soon as it’s available!!!
